What are the side effects of curcumin?

March 30, 2022

Curcumin is the active ingredient contained in turmeric, an herb often used in curries and yellow foods. Curcumin has medicinal properties and is used in traditional Chinese medicine and Indian medicine to treat various health problems such as indigestion, jaundice, dysentery, arthritis and chest tightness. As a natural product, many people believe that curcumin has no side effects, and clinical trials have shown that it is safe to take in small amounts daily. But despite this, some common side effects from curcumin are occasionally noticed.

People who are allergic to curcumin are most prone to contact dermatitis. This condition usually appears as a red rash on exposed skin. The rash usually disappears within 24-72 hours. If left untreated, the skin will continue to itch and burn, and then there may be blisters or hives in some areas of the infected skin.

Mild abdominal pain is another possible side effect of high doses of curcumin and can last for a long time. Because of its ability to treat heartburn and stomach ulcers, overdose can lead to nausea and even severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Curcumin stimulates the uterus and has the potential to cause menstruation. These two side effects are especially dangerous for pregnant women, as taking curcumin during pregnancy can increase the chance of miscarriage. Therefore, pregnant women are advised to avoid curcumin.

Other side effects of curcumin include an increased chance of bleeding. Because curcumin slows blood clotting, it is not recommended for people with blood disorders. Taking it with drugs such as anticoagulants can further increase the risk. Because of this risk factor, curcumin should be avoided for two weeks before surgery to prevent excessive bleeding during surgery.

One of the biggest negative effects of curcumin is the toxins it brings to the liver and gallbladder when taken in high doses over a long period of time. In addition, curcumin may worsen the condition in the presence of stones in the gallbladder.

People with conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure have the potential to cause some serious side effects when taking curcumin. Although curcumin has the effect of lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, since patients are often already using certain medications to control blood sugar and blood pressure levels, taking curcumin may complicate problems, such as causing hypoglycemia or hypotension.
