Functional components of mulberry leaves

According to analysis by Japanese scholar Takayoshi Tani and others, mulberry leaves contain many functional components, with higher levels of magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and zinc per 100 grams of dry matter, at 362, 238, 441, and 6.1mg, respectively. The Vitamin content is also very rich, and its content is not affected by the harvest period. The content of crude protein and phosphorus is higher in the upper leaves than in the lower leaves; On the contrary, the content of crude fat, crude ash, calcium, magnesium, and iron is higher in higher leaves than in lower leaves. According to the analysis of Machi Bomin, mulberry leaves are rich in the striking neurotransmitter and antihypertensive amino butyric acid (GABA), with an average of 226mg/100g of dry matter.

The analysis of phytosterols in mulberry leaves by Chiko Kishi et al. showed that every 100g of mulberry leaves contained 46mg of sitosterol and 3mg of stigmasterol. Green tea only contains 13mg of sitosterol per 100g. There is almost no stigmasterol. It is known that plant sterols can inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the intestinal tract. Mulberry leaves contain flavonoids such as isoquercetin, quercetin, and quercetin. Especially, it also contains a unique alkaloid, 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ), with a content of 0.1% in dry matter.

03
Mulberry leaves have multiple functional functions

1. The DNJ contained in mulberry leaves can inhibit the increase of blood sugar levels and is the nemesis of glucose

All cells in the human body use glucose as their energy source. The sugar in the blood circulation is almost entirely glucose, and its concentration is called the blood glucose value. The blood sugar level of a healthy person is 8-100mg/dl (on an empty stomach), which increases from 0.5-1 hours after eating to approximately 110-140mg/dl. After 2 hours, it returns to its original blood sugar level.
If insulin secretion is insufficient or its activity is not strong, the glucose absorbed from food will stay in the blood, not be fully utilized and excreted with urine, and then diabetes will occur. Miyawara et al. conducted a study on the inhibitory effect of mulberry leaves on blood glucose elevation in rats. It was found that the blood glucose levels of the two groups of rats with added mulberry leaves were significantly lower than those of the control group.

2. Mulberry leaves can promote qi circulation and improve intestinal function

After the unabsorbed sugars in the small intestine enter the large intestine, they cause fermentation through the action of the gut microbiota, producing carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas, and generating organic acids such as butyric acid, propionic acid, lactic acid, and hexanoic acid. Due to the generation of organic acids, the intestinal environment becomes acidic, which can inhibit the proliferation of harmful bacteria and play a role in regulating the sun exposure tract. Mainly able to alleviate abdominal symptoms such as bowel sounds, farting, and bloating.

3. Mulberry leaves can prevent and treat hard stools and constipation

Due to the high content of minerals (sodium, potassium, etc.), food fiber, vegetable fat, and undigested and absorbed sugars in mulberry leaves, the water content in the intestines can increase, causing fecal softening, promoting intestinal peristalsis, accelerating fecal excretion, and also increasing the excretion of water from the body. In addition, the flavonoids contained in mulberry leaves can inhibit the absorption of cholesterol and have anti-cancer effects. Some minerals contained in mulberry leaves have special functions.

04
Reasonable utilization of mulberry leaf products

1. Mulberry leaf tea

The simplest way is to drink mulberry leaves directly in the form of "mulberry leaf tea". Since May 1996, cheap "mulberry leaf tea" (packaged in 3g x 30 bags) has been sold in the Japanese market. The feedback survey on drinking this tea shows that the physical condition has generally improved and can effectively prevent constipation, especially for women; It has good effect on preventing diabetes. Manager Nobusu Noda predicts that there will be a leap in drinking "mulberry leaf tea" in Japan, following the best-selling Du Zhongtu.

2. Mulberry leaf powder

There are two types: one is to break mulberry leaves intact into fine powder (which can be used to make beverages, etc.); Another type is powder made by processing the extract from mulberry leaves. This powder, even when added to ice cream, does not affect the taste. The leaves turn green and have a green tea aroma.

3. Mulberry leaf Tonic Diet

In Nagano, Japan, mulberry leaves are also used as a kind of Tonic Diet, which is called "boiled water copied mulberry leaves". The key to using the above-mentioned mulberry leaf products is the issue of taking time. Japanese scholars have shown that mulberry leaf products must be consumed at the beginning or initial stage of the diet.
