The Function and Application of Seabuckthorn Leaves as Common Food

20240410150458
China is the country with the richest sea buckthorn resources in the world, and the components and contents of sea buckthorn vary from different regions and varieties. The fruit of seabuckthorn is a drug listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China and is recognized as a dual-use resource by the State Council. Therefore, the research and utilization of the fruit have received attention and attention from everyone. There are also more and more beverages, foods, health products, and drugs processed from the fruit. However, currently there is not much utilization of seabuckthorn leaves.
According to literature reports, sea buckthorn leaves, like sea buckthorn fruits, contain extremely rich nutrients and physiological substances, mainly including proteins, polysaccharides, organic acids, alkaloids, flavonoids, amino acids, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and trace elements.
The amino acid content is relatively rich, with more than 20 types, among which the essential amino acid content in the human body is relatively high. Arginine used for liver coma rescue drugs, histidine used for treating duodenal ulcers, and seabuckthorn leaves all have considerable content.
Sea buckthorn leaves contain a variety of trace elements required by the human body, such as Fe, Mg, Ca, Zn, Mo, K, etc., and their content is relatively high. The magnesium and iron content in sea buckthorn leaves is much higher than that in daily fruits and vegetables, and except for the potassium content that is lower than spinach, they can be comparable to other fruits and vegetables.

The efficacy of seabuckthorn leaves

1. Research by Professor Teng Xiaoping

Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has shown that flavonoid glycosides in seabuckthorn leaves have a similar lipid-lowering effect to ginkgo flavonoid glycosides. Flavonoids in seabuckthorn leaves are easily soluble in water and can be used for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Total flavonoids in seabuckthorn have the functions of increasing coronary blood flow, reducing myocardial oxygen consumption, inhibiting platelet aggregation, anti-tumor, and regulating immunity.

2. Research by Professor Lian Yongshan

Northwest Normal University has shown that the leaves of seabuckthorn are rich in various bioactive substances, among which the Vitamin B group contains components that can promote acetylcholine synthesis, thereby maintaining normal gastrointestinal peristalsis and secretion of digestive fluid, which is beneficial for digestion and intestinal contents excretion

3. Removing nitrite to prevent cancer.

Nitrosamines are currently one of the strongest chemical carcinogens known to cause malignant tumors in various organs such as the liver of humans and animals. Nitrite is more suitable for synthesizing nitrosamines in the human stomach. Therefore, clearing nitrite in the body is an effective way to prevent cancer. Experimental results have shown that 5.0g of seabuckthorn leaf extract has a similar ability to clear nitrite as 0.4ml of ascorbic acid.

4. Research on clearing free radicals and delaying aging

has shown that total flavonoids from seabuckthorn leaves have significant anti-aging effects. Its mechanism of action may be related to its inhibition of brain MAO-B activity, reduction of free radical reactions, enhancement of immune function, and improvement of nucleic acid metabolism.

5. Professors Wang Bingwen and others from the Medical Department

Xi'an Jiaotong University (formerly the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacy of Xi'an Medical University) have demonstrated through experiments that the ethyl acetate extract of seabuckthorn leaves has significant expectorant, antitussive, and asthmatic effects

--Excerpted from the first issue of Northwest Pharmaceutical Journal in 1996, titled "The expectorant, antitussive, and asthmatic effects of ethyl acetate extract from seabuckthorn leaves"

6. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

The experimental results of Jiao Chao, Yin Lijun, and others from China Agricultural University in 2007 showed that the total flavonoid antibacterial effect of ethanol extract from Chinese seabuckthorn leaves was significantly better than that of water extract. It had good inhibitory effects on six tested bacterial strains: Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus cereus, especially the strongest inhibitory effect on Proteus vulgaris and Bacillus subtilis.

The application of seabuckthorn leaves

1. Research on seabuckthorn leaf oil has shown that using liquid dioxide to extract tender branches and leaves of seabuckthorn can yield an olive colored oil liquid with the aroma of seabuckthorn oil. Among the bioactive substances, 24% to 45% are vitamin E, P vitamins, B vitamins, vitamin C, bile alkaloids, and organic acids.
Given the broad-spectrum efficacy of these bioactive substances, the liquid carbon dioxide extract from tender branches and leaves of seabuckthorn can also be widely used in the production of medicine, spices, and cosmetics.
2. Sea buckthorn leaf tea currently available on the market includes sea buckthorn leaf tea that is stir fried, sea buckthorn green leaf tea that is directly cooled and air dried, fermented sea buckthorn black tea, and sea buckthorn fu tea that deliberately cultivates a community of "coronavirus fungus" during the production process, similar to black tea.
Some are made in the shape of Pu erh tea, some are brewed in bags, and some are made by directly squeezing the tender branches and leaves of sea buckthorn into a beverage similar to barley green juice.
There is also sea buckthorn leaf tea that has truly undergone health function tests. See relevant materials such as International Research and Development of Seabuckthorn.
3. Sea buckthorn leaf powder and sea buckthorn matcha are made by steaming the tender leaves of spring sea buckthorn and then turning them into cake tea (ball tea) for preservation. Before consumption, put it on fire and bake again to dry, then grind it into powder with natural stone or machine. Experiments have shown that eating tea can provide more nutrients than drinking tea. A bowl of matcha contains more nutrients than 30 cups of regular green tea, so almost all Japanese tea ceremony teachers live a long life. Changing from drinking tea to eating tea is not only a reform of dietary habits, but also a need to adapt to the fast-paced modern life.
In modern society, it is more commonly used to make exquisite food and is widely used for baking desserts, and so on. Sea buckthorn matcha desserts are very popular in southern China, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. At present, some daily edible products are also adding seabuckthorn leaf powder.
And many franchise chain brands have emerged, specializing in making matcha desserts.
4. Sea buckthorn leaf extract: The total flavonoid content in sea buckthorn leaves is higher than that in sea buckthorn fruits. Flavonoids play a crucial role in pharmaceutical development. Its medical value is far more valuable than gold.
The applications of flavonoids include: in health food, in the development of pharmaceutical products, and in food additives.

With the continuous expansion of planting bases, seabuckthorn leaves have good market prospects for both initial and long-term economic development.
