What are ginkgo flavonoids and what are their uses?

Ginkgo flavonoids are Ginkgo biloba extract, which can increase cerebrovascular blood flow, improve cerebrovascular blood circulation function, protect brain cells, dilate coronary arteries, prevent angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, prevent thrombosis, and improve immunity.

Basic research on ginkgo flavonoids:

1. Promote circulation

Flavonoids promote circulation in both the brain and the limbs of the body. One of the main health functions of flavonoids is the inhibition of a substance called platelet-activating factor (PAF), a mediator released from cells that causes platelets to clump together (clump together). High levels of PAF can cause nerve cell damage, decreased blood flow to the central nervous system, inflammation, and bronchoconstriction. Much like free radicals, high PAF levels can also lead to aging. Ginkgolide and bilobalide protect nerve cells in the central nervous system from damage during periods of ischemia (lack of oxygen to tissues in the body). This function may be useful in adjuvant therapy for patients suffering from stroke. In addition to inhibiting platelet adhesion, Ginkgo biloba extract regulates vascular tone and elasticity. In other words, it makes blood vessel circulation more efficient. This circulatory efficiency-enhancing effect affects both the large blood vessels (arteries) and the smaller blood vessels (capillaries) in the circulatory system.

2. Antioxidant effect

Flavonoids may exert antioxidant properties in the brain, eye retina, and cardiovascular system. Its antioxidant effects in the brain and central nervous system may help prevent age-related decline in brain function. The antioxidant properties of Ginkgo biloba extract in the brain are of particular interest. The brain and central nervous system are particularly vulnerable to free radical attack. Brain damage caused by free radicals is widely believed to be a contributing factor in many diseases that accompany aging, including Alzheimer's disease.

3. Anti-aging function

Flavonoids increase blood flow to the brain and have an excellent tonic effect on the nervous system. Hundreds of scientific studies involving tens of thousands of patients have confirmed the efficacy of Ginkgo biloba extract against a number of problems including insufficient blood flow to the brain and mental decline in elderly patients. Ginkgo is good for many possible symptoms of aging, such as: anxiety and depression, memory impairment, difficulty concentrating, decreased alertness, decreased intelligence, dizziness, headache, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), retinal macular Degeneration (the most common cause of adult blindness), disturbance of the inner ear (which can lead to partial hearing loss), poor terminal circulation, impotence due to poor blood flow to the penis.

4. Dementia, Alzheimer`s and memory improvement

Scientists reviewed all published high-quality research on ginkgo and mild memory impairment and concluded that ginkgo was significantly more effective than placebo in improving memory and perceptual function. Ginkgo is widely used in Europe to treat dementia. Ginkgo is thought to help prevent or treat these brain disorders because it increases blood flow to the brain and its antioxidant properties. Despite the scientific flaws in many clinical trials, evidence that ginkgo may increase thinking, learning and memory in Alzheimer's patients is still highly anticipated.

5. Eye problems

The flavonoids in ginkgo may stop or ease some retinopathy. There are many possible causes of retinal damage, including diabetes and macular degeneration. Maculopathy (commonly referred to as age-related macular degeneration or ARMD) is a progressive degenerative eye disease that tends to occur in older adults. It is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. Research suggests that ginkgo may help preserve vision in people with ARMD.

6. Treatment of high blood pressure

Ginkgo biloba extract can simultaneously reduce the adverse effects of blood cholesterol, triacylglycerol, and very low density lipoprotein on the human body, reduce blood lipids, improve microcirculation, and inhibit blood coagulation. These have significant therapeutic effects on hypertension.

7. Treatment of diabetes

At present, Ginkgo biloba extracts have been used in medicine to replace insulin for diabetics, indicating that Ginkgo biloba has the function of insulin to regulate blood sugar. Many glucose tolerance tests have proved that flavonoids can regulate blood sugar and improve insulin resistance, thereby reducing blood sugar. Insulin antibodies, the effect of enhancing insulin sensitivity is obvious.
